The Parliamentary Committee on Official Language was constituted in 1976.

It was established under Section 4 of the Official Languages Act, 1963. This committee is responsible for reviewing the progress made in the use of Hindi in official work of the Union. It comprises 30 members of Parliament, with 20 from the Lok Sabha and 10 from the Rajya Sabha.

The Official Languages Act was passed on May 10, 1963.

According to the Official Language Rules, Indian states and union territories are classified into three regions: A, B, and C. These regions are defined based on the usage of the official language Hindi.

Region A:
Includes states and union territories where Hindi is widely used and preferred for official purposes.

Region B:
Includes states and union territories where Hindi and English are both used for official purposes.

Region C:
Includes all other states and union territories where Hindi usage is not as prevalent.

Specific Examples:

Region A: Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

The Official Languages Act was first amended in 1967, leading to the enactment of the Official Languages (Amendment) Act 1967, which came into force on January 8, 1968. This amendment, specifically the Twenty-first Amendment, added Sindhi to the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution.

Section 3 shall come into force on the 26th day of January, 1965 and the remaining provisions of this Act shall come into force on such date @ as the Central Government may, by notification in the Official Gazette, appoint and different dates may be appointed for different provisions of this Act.
